FAQs
Freshers' Week
When is Freshers Week and how does it work?
Week starting the 22nd of Sep (same as welcome week). As for what happens: it's a week where the faculty hold introduction sessions so you can get a feel for what the year is like. Throughout the week, keep your eyes peeled for events run by MedSoc – it's a fantastic way to meet more people!
Shopping
Do we need to buy scrubs, stethoscopes or any other medical supplies before we start university?
Nope. No rush for scrubs or stethoscopes, but make sure you have a white labcoat for anatomy. You’ll have a two week grace period but it helps to be prepared!
Academics
How much time do you spend studying? Do you have time for part time work?
Studying time depends on the person. There is a lot of free time in year one if you wish to work a part time job as well as socialising and relaxing but balance is key to make sure you don't fall behind. Use the first semester to trial what works best for you.
Holidays
Do we get full summer holidays throughout all of medical school?
Unfortunately not :(
First year and second year are full summer holidays each (from around the end of exams in May/June to late September) but gets progressively shorter after that – enjoy it while you can!
Shopping
Textbooks: please help!
Don't buy any! Online resources are a) more accessible, b) up-to-date and c) cost next to nothing. Head over to our Education page to see what we have, including questions made by our very own Education Rep, Sophie!
Placements
Are there any placements in first and second year?
In first year you’ll have a GP placement every other week where you learn history taking, and a one day placement in either the labour ward or A&E. Second year you have two 12 hour HCA shifts and in third year, proper, full day placements begin.
